James Chance and the Contortions (originally just Contortions, with a spin-off group called James White and the Blacks) was a band led by saxophonist and vocalist James Chance, formed in 1977. They played a key role in New York City's downtown no wave music scene in the late 1970s and were prominently featured on the influential 1978 compilation No New York.
